TAMPA - Junior Dominique Jones was named to the BIG EAST Honor Roll on Monday afternoon.
Jones leads the team with 19.4 points per game, 14 steals and 24 assists and is second on the squad with 7.2 rebounds per contest. He has scored at least 13 points in each of the five games, and has six or more rebounds in four of five games. The junior played all 40 minutes against South Carolina and Wilmington, and 38 minutes against Virginia.
The junior guard is currently fifth in the league in scoring, third in steals, ninth in assists, 17th in rebounding and first in minutes played.
In three games at the Charleston Classic last weekend, Jones averaged 20.7 points, 7.7 rebounds, 4.7 assists and 3.0 steals in 38.7 minutes per game. He shot 52.4 percent from the field and 30 percent from long range.
Jones started the tournament with his third-career double-double, a 17-point, 10-rebound effort against Davidson, who was receiving votes in the AP Poll. Jones also had six assists and three steals in the game.
The next night Jones was one rebound shy of back-to-back double-doubles, hitting for 17 points and nine rebounds against South Carolina, in addition to five assists in 40 minutes.
The preseason BIG EAST honorable mention player exploded for his season-high 28 points and had six steals, three assists and four rebounds in 40 minutes against UNC-Wilmington in the consolation game of the tournament. His stingy defense was against a sharp shooter for the Seahawks, who Jones held to 1-for-5 from behind the arc and forced to make four turnovers.
The Lake Wales native is currently listed on five career records lists at USF and looking in on two more. He is ninth in three point field goals made (115), field goals attempted (917) and three pointers attempted (50), and 10th in scoring (1,189 points) and free throws made (262). He is just 42 attempted free throws, 36 made field goals and 13 steals away from 10th in each category.
