TAMPA -The University of South Florida's run in the USTA/ITA
Southeast Regional came to an end Sunday.
The last Bull in competition, Katie Vasenina, was eliminated
in the quarterfinals match after a 6-3, 6-0 loss to the University of
Florida's Sofie Oyen.
“It was a lot closer than the scores says,” said head coach
Agustin Moreno. “There were some tough points and she missed a couple easy
shots, and then it just got harder and harder mentally.”
Vasenina started the tournament winning her first two
singles matches and a doubles match with partner Loreto Alonso Martinez on
Friday. On Saturday she beat Georgia Tech's Elizabeth Killborn in three sets, sending her to the quarterfinal match on Sunday.
“I have a lot of things that I can learn from my singles
matches,” Vasenina said. “This will just help me improve a lot before the
season.”
Vasenina finished the weekend with a 3-1 record in singles
play and went 1-1 in doubles matches.
The well-organized tournament will conclude on Monday, and
the champions from both the singles and doubles matches will earn a trip to the
USTA/ITA National
Indoor Intercollegiate Championships in Flushing, N.Y. Matches will be played
Nov. 8-11 at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.
