TAMPA, NOV. 30, 2015 –Senior center Jaleel Cousins averaged 12.7 points and 8.7 rebounds over USF's three games this past week and was named to the American Athletic Conference Honor Roll on Monday.
The Mobile, Ala., native recorded a double-double in USF's wins over Albany and Savannah State. Cousins had 13 points and tied a career high with 12 rebounds against the Great Danes on Tuesday and posted 13 points, 11 rebounds, three blocks and a career-best five steals against the Tigers on Sunday.
Sandwiched between the two wins was a loss to No. 1 Kentucky where Cousins battled foul trouble to score 12 points in 18 minutes of play.
Cousins has had a breakout start to the season so far. Playing at a leaner weight of 255 pounds, 10 fewer than last season, Cousins has recorded three double-doubles in seven games played this season and ranks sixth in the conference with 8.1 rebounds per game. His 1.9 blocked shots per game rank fifth in the conference.
Cousins has been able to increase his production by staying on the floor longer. His 24.1 minutes played this season is over twice as much as last season (11.5).
It was the first time Cousins had been recognized by the conference. Joining him on the honor roll was Daniel Hamilton (UConn), Rob Gray Jr. (Houston), Shaq Goodwin (Memphis) and Louis Dabney (Tulane). The player of the week was Cincinnati's Troy Caupain and the rookie of the week was Dedric Lawson of Memphis.
USF is 2-5 on the season and next play at Delaware on Thursday at 7 p.m.
The USF men's basketball team returns seven from last season's team including regular starters Ruben Guerrero, Chris Perry, Nehemias Morillo and Bo Zeigler. Orlando Antigua is in his second season as the head coach after spending the previous five season as an assistant to Naismith Hall of Fame coach John Calipari. USF's schedule is comprised of nine teams which had an RPI of 54 or better last season. The Bulls host 19 games, five of those teams made the NCAA Tournament last season.
