O'Neal's Record-Breaking Day Leads Bulls in Boston

BOSTON, JAN. 22, 2016 – Senior Matthew O'Neal was one of six event winners on Friday at the Joe Donahue Games. He won the triple jump with a meet record, school record and current NCAA best distance of 54 feet, 8 inches.

O'Neal's jump was over eight inches further than his previous school record of 53-11.25, set last season. It is the third triple jump title in as many meets for the four-time All-American. It was also the first time that O'Neal broke 54 feet. His best outdoor jump, also the school record, is 53-8.5.

Senior Dwight Davis won the 200m and 400m. He finished the 200m dash in a time of 22.31 and the 400m dash in a time of 48.79, which broke the meet record. Senior Bruce Barclay won the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.09.

Sophomore David Akins won the pole vault with a personal-best height of 16-8.75 (5.10m). Joe Fogarasi was third (16-2.75), Winston Perry was fourth (15-9) and David Bell was fifth (15-9).

Senior Devin Screen won the weight throw with a personal best 61-2.25 (18.65m). Charvin Graham (57-9.75) and Zach Diaczynsky (55-8.25) finished fourth and fifth, respectively.

USF went one and two in the triple jump as freshman Ennis Errol finished as the runner-up with a personal best jump of 49-3.50 (15.02m), good for fourth all-time at USF. Another talented freshman jumper entered the USF record books as Jonah Daniels' sixth place jump of 22-5.75 (6.85m) was good for fifth all-time.

Junior Roshard Williams finished third in the 60m dash at 6.93 while freshman Jonah Daniels was fifth at 7.00.

“The men are very seasoned and we continue to build off of their strengths,” said head coach Warren Bye.

On the women's side, senior Laticia Sims won the 60m hurdles with a personal best and meet record time of 8.61.

Senior Lauren Kilts was runner-up in the high jump with a personal-best height of 5-7.25 (1.71) which ranks fifth in school history.

The women's 4x400m relay team of Josephine Gulston, Chelsea Francis, Kadeidra Jackson and Tiah Sanborn finished fifth with a time of 3:57.28, the second-best time in school history.

Junior Bernicia Hollifield finished fourth in the weight throw with a distance of 56-8.75 (17.29m). Senior Hannah Gospodinsky was fourth in the shot put with a throw of 44-9.50 (13.65m). Freshman Chelsea Francis was fourth in the 60m dash in a time of 7.71. Senior Catherine Blaney also finished in the top five by placing fourth in the mile with a time of 5:00.99.

“Our women are very young,” said Bye. “The coaches are doing a great job developing them and we are improving every week.”

The men's team finished second with 107 points behind Rhode Island which had 112. The women placed fourth with 57 points behind UMass Amherst (71.50), Northeastern (105.50) and UCF (154).

USF does not compete next week, but returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 6 at the Villanova Invitational in Staten Island, N.Y.

Led by 10th-year head coach Warren Bye, the USF track and field team has produced 21 All-Americans (eight men, 13 women) since 2000 and at least one All-American in seven of the last eight years. Senior Matthew O'Neal is a four-time All-American in the triple jump. The Bulls host the USF Invitational on March 11-12 and the Bulls Invitational on March 17-18. USF is home to the 2018 NCAA Track and Field East Preliminary.
