Bulls Raise over $12,000 for Vs. Cancer

TAMPA, APRIL 10, 2017 In an effort to raise awareness for childhood cancer, the University of South Florida baseball team joined forces with the Vs. Cancer Foundation for a third-straight year to raise money for the cause.

The Bulls exceeded their initial goal for the third year in a row by raising nearly $13,000 for the Vs. Cancer Foundation and Tampa General Hospital.

USF swept its intrastate rivals UCF with a 7-5 win on Sunday. The War on I-4 sweep and weekend as a whole culminated with the annual shaving of the heads. All players and the coaching staff shaved their heads to show support for the fight against the disease with the help of Great Clips.

The Bulls have raised roughly $40,000 for the Vs. Cancer Foundation and TGH since they joined the fight three years ago.

“I look forward to this event every year," said assistant coach Billy Mohl. "This day means a lot to me personally. It is always fun to see a group of guys come together and help support kids battling cancer. I am truly proud of our team and their efforts in making this year's Vs. Cancer game a successful one.”

USF continues its fight against baseball competition Tuesday night at Stetson. The game begins at 6:30 p.m. and can be seen on ESPN3.

About USF Baseball

The University of South Florida baseball team is one of the fastest rising programs in the country. Under the guidance of head coach Mark Kingston, the Bulls reached the NCAA Regionals in 2015 for the first time in 13 years and USF followed that success with a consensus Top 10 recruiting class. Five players from that recruiting class were everyday starters in 2016 including outfielder Chris Chatfield (Riverview, Fla.), who led the team in home runs, and catcher Joe Genord (Lake Worth, Fla.), who was named the 2016 PGCBL Player of the Year. The Bulls won series from two ranked teams in 2016 (No. 21 East Carolina, No. 25 Michigan State, began the 2017 season with a series win over Iowa and earned just it's second win over a top-five team with a 4-2 victory against No. 3 Florida State on Feb. 21. The win over FSU was part of the best start in program history thanks to a 19-game winning streak, the second-longest in USF Baseball records.

The USF Baseball program has won five conference titles and the Bulls have made 11 NCAA appearances.
