TAMPA, Fla. – The University of South Florida baseball team was joined by more than 55 baseball scouts Thursday evening at fall practice.

The visitors were a mixture of area scouts, supervisors and cross checkers.

"It's important for these guys [scouts] to be out here because it shows that the program is coming along and we have talent here," said USF head coach Lelo Prado. "They are excited about the players we have here. These guys are going to be around for awhile because we have some great young talent. That's what it's all about."

After the routine pregame warmups of batting practice and infield/outfield drills in front of the guests, the Bulls took to the field for a non-traditional scrimmage. Pitchers faced three outs or five batters, whichever came first, and only were allowed to toss for a maximum of two innings.

Nine pitchers took the mound in the scrimmage, including Matt Stull, Teddy Kaufman, Shawn Sanford, Matt Quevedo, Andrew Salguiero, Derrick Stultz, Randy Fontanez, Junior Carlin and Kyle Eastham.

"We let mostly the older guys who have been her for a year throw," said Prado. "They all pitched great and the hitters did their job, too. The scouts are happy and we are happy."

In the field, players continue to shift around the outfield, as well as a few moves on the dirt.

The starting lineup for the first team, in batting order, was: Mike Consolmagno (LF), Peter Brotons (2B), Jonathan Koscso (3B), Chris Rey (RF), Junior Carlin (CF), Andrew Robinson (SS), Andrew Longley (C) and Daniel Rockhold (1B).

For the other team: Ryan Lockwood (CF), Sam Mende (SS), Stephen Hunt (RF), Todd Brazeal (1B), Trey Manz (C), Zach Rios (3B), Ian MacGeorge (LF) and Jordan McGillis (2B).

After a few innings, Consolmagno moved to center, Rey to right and Rockhold to catcher. Undergraduate assistant coach Charles Cleveland also stepped in to help, playing a few innings at first base. Pitcher Matt Stull even filled in for the final inning in left field, catching the first and only ball hit to him.

Another surprise in the dugout was the appearance of 2008 left-handed set-up pitcher David Torcise, who was attending practice as a spectator. This summer Torcise played for the Billings Mustangs (Cincinnati Reds) where he earned one win and a save while posting a 1.82 ERA in 29.2 innings.

The Bulls will continue Fall Ball for three more weeks. Keep an eye on the USF Athletics website at www.gousfbulls.com for more information about practice times.
