TAMPA – This week Antonio Daniels, of the NBA's New Orleans Hornets, was a guest instructor for the 2009 Stan Heath Individual Basketball Camp, which drew more than 80 boys from the Tampa Bay Area.
“The camp was outstanding this week,” said Heath. “The campers worked really hard. I thought they learned a lot this week, especially fundamentals and understanding how hard they need to play. Our coaching staff did a great job with these guys.”
Daniels worked with players on ball-handling moves and showed players how to beat their defenders on the dribble, among many other skills.
“It’s phenomenal to have Antonio [Daniels] here at camp,” added Heath, who was an assistant coach at Bowling Green when Daniels was a player there. “He was just so accessible, which is what really made it special. He reached out to the kids and they interacted with him. When do you ever get an NBA guy, especially a 12-year veteran, come in and spend that type of quality time with kids.”
Campers ages 7-18 earned valuable basketball experience through skill development, 3-on-3 games and shooting competitions. Each afternoon the campers also competed in 5-on-5 games on the main court of the Sun Dome, where the USF men’s basketball team plays.
The campers also learned the importance of sportsmanship and team play while learning the fundamentals of basketball.
Along with Heath and guest instructor Daniels, the camp was coached by the USF men’s basketball staff and players as well as area basketball coaches.
