Coach Soundbytes: Defensive Backs Evaluations

TAMPA - With summer workouts now here, the USF football position coaches had a chance to sit down and give a few soundbytes on the players currently with the team after a successful spring season. Each position coach said a few words about the players under their wing.

Today, we check in with defensive backs coach Rick Smith to hear what he had to say about the players who brings a load of talent but are still an inexperienced group.

Check back with GoUSFBulls.com this week for more soundbytes.

Rick Smith, Assistant Head Coach - Defensive Backs
On George Baker
“A good kid who had a really good spring. From where he was at the beginning of spring to where he finished up, he got better every day. The fastest corner we've got. I expect him to play next year.”

On Daniel Bryant
“Switching over from wide receiver, he made tremendous progress throughout the spring. Daniel got better every day. He just needs to continue to work hard.”

On Tyson Butler
“Tyson has talent and can run. The fact he was a tailback in high school tells you he was the best athlete in school. I'm excited about seeing him in the fall and what we can do with him.”

On Ricardo Dixon
“A pretty good scout team player last year. Is coming off shoulder surgery and looking to get back to full health again.”

On JaQuez Jenkins
“For a guy who sat out a whole year, I thought he had a great spring. The jury is still out on knowing just how much he can contribute this year and beyond. I believe we can win with him.”

On Chris Lane
“A great young man who had an even better spring. He's got as good a work ethic as anybody in the secondary. We look for him to contribute on special teams and possibly crack the two-deep at safety.”

On Jon Lejiste
“Jon is a very good player. A very quiet player who has a chance to be an excellent player on the field.”

On Mistral Raymond
“Skinny has great passion for football and is very energetic on the field. Of all the players in the secondary, he loves to play as much as any of them. He's a senior and he knows this is his chance now. He's going to have to play corner and safety for us.”

On Quenton Washington
“He's got a good work ethic. He's very inquisitive and always wants to know why we do something a certain way and learn more. I thought he really grew a lot. I'm looking for him to be an outstanding player this fall.”

On Kayvon Webster
“An exceptional athlete with a lot of talent. He'll be one of our top corners next year. He's going to have to play a lot of snaps as a true sophomore. He's always got a smile on his face and will continue to mature as time goes on.”

On Jerrell Young

“He's our best hitter in the secondary. A quiet type who loves to play the game. He goes about his business, works extremely hard and has a lot of confidence in himself. He leads by example.”
