TAMPA - The biggest test of the season is in store for the Bulls 7 p.m. Wednesday in Syracuse, N.Y.
The USF men's basketball team rides a four-game winning streak into the Carrier Dome, where it will face the No. 2 Orange and a win would put a huge exclamation mark on the Bulls' NCAA Tournament resume.
USF (17-10, 10-4) has the most Big East wins in the program's history and is no longer a team college basketball experts can ignore when it comes to the postseason picture.
"We are trying to create and build a tradition at our school," USF head coach Stan Heath said. "We know that we still need to do more to reach some of our goals, so we are motivated. There's still a lot more work that we need to do."
The Bulls did the job Sunday in a victory at Pitt, holding the Panthers to a season-low 47 points and keeping stars Tray Woodall and Ashton Gibbs grounded with two points apiece.
"It will be a low scoring game with the way they play. Their numbers have indicated that there will be fewer possessions," Pitt head coach Jamie Dixon said. "It has worked for them this year. Hugh Robertson has a lot to do with it."
USF also stepped up on the offensive end with freshman point guard Anthony Collins posting a career-high 22 points (8-for-10 from the field). Collins was named the Big East's rookie of the week on Monday after averaging 16 points and 6.5 assists last week.
"Anthony is so good with the basketball in his hands," Heath said. "When he's knocking down in-between shots, I'm glad I'm not the opposing coach."
The Bulls didn't take long celebrating Sunday's milestone victory, however, with a short turnaround to prepare for Syracuse.
"We do not want to be satisfied with these 10 wins," Collins said. "We have four more games. We are going to compete and play hard to try to win four more games."
