TAMPA - In the latter of USF's Saturday double-header the Bulls beat
Samford University, picking up their second win on the day. The Bulls weren't
contempt with only beating Michigan in the first game as they quickly turned
their focus to Samford and walked away with a 3-0 victory.
Sophomore Erica Nunn picked up her first win as a Bull as she
led the Bulls to their third straight victory. Nunn threw four innings and
picked up seven strikeouts before being replaced by sophomore Sam Greiner.
“I thought we had great pitching from our staff,” head coach
Ken Eriksen said. “I thought for Erica Nunn's first collegiate start she did a
great job, Sammy Greiner's first appearance this year and she really shut them
down.”
The Bulls struck quickly scoring a run in the bottom of the
first inning on a squeeze play by Stephanie Medina. Kourtney Salvarola, who
drew a leadoff walk, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and then moved to
third on a wild pitch, scored on the squeeze.
USF added to that lead in the fourth inning when Morgan
Litchfield picked up an RBI single with a base hit down the left field line.
Scoring on the play was freshman Lee Ann Spivey, who reached base on a double
after just missing her first homerun of the season when she hit an absolute
rocket off the top of the wall in left center.
The third and final run of the game came in the bottom of
the fifth inning when Salvarola hit a solo homerun to left center. Salvarola
finished the game with two runs scored and one RBI.
“She's playing All-American type of shortstop right now,” Eriksen
said. “She's just a ball player and you know when she comes to the plate
anything can happen.”
Lindsey Richardson picked up her second save on the day when
she came in to pitch for Sam Greiner and recorded the final three outs of the
game.
“To have somebody come in from the bullpen to kill it, like Lindsey
Richardson, we're pretty fortunate,” Eriksen said. “Our pitching staff is
really buying into the fact that you have to mix speeds, change things up and
not try to overthrow the ball, so I was very pleased with the maturity from the
pitching staff today.”
The Bulls will be back in action with a home game against
Florida Atlantic University Sunday, Feb. 10 at 1:30 p.m.
