Anderson Finishes Second in High Jump at NCAAs

EUGENE – University of South Florida junior Courtney Anderson posted a second-place finish in the high jump at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field National Championships on Saturday, clearing a USF program record and personal-best height of 6-1.25 (1.86m).

Anderson, who had set the Bulls' record earlier in the season with her clearance of 6-0 (1.82m), led for most of the competition as she cleared her first five heights through 6-1.25 (1.86m) on her first attempt. Only one competitor cleared the next attempt at 6-2.25 (1.89m), giving Anderson a second-place finish and her first All-America honor as she had fewer misses than the other two competitors.

“We're so proud of Courtney for what she accomplished today,” said head coach Warren Bye. “To come out and clear those heights on her first attempt speaks to her progression this year, as she not only set the school record once, but twice. She's grown so much and we can't wait to see her development continue next season.”

The overall winner, senior Brigetta Barrett from Arizona who cleared at 6-2.25 on her first attempt, was the 2012 Olympic Silver Medalist in the event. Anderson is just the second woman in program history to finish second in the nation at the NCAA Outdoor Championships and the first to do so since Tara Quinn did in the 10,000m in 2002.

Also competing on Saturday was freshman Matthew O'Neal who had a stellar performance in the triple jump as he finished ninth with a leap of 52-2 (15.90m). O'Neal, who holds the USF school record for the triple jump, was one of three freshmen to make the nine-person finals, after finishing fifth in his flight.
