TAMPA, May 26, 2015 – Former USF softball player Veronica Gajownik was one of 18 players named to the 2015 U.S. Women's Baseball National Team this past weekend after a three-day tryout in North Carolina.
Gajownik will play infield and pitch for Team USA after making the final roster for the first time in her career.
“I am still in shock and I feel so blessed that I can give back to my country,” Gajownik said after finding out she made the team.
The Winter Park, Fla., native played the last two seasons for the Bulls' softball team after transferring from Indian River State College and finished her USF career with 68 hits, 35 runs and 34 RBIs. She was also named to the American Athletic Conference All-Academic Team and an NFCA All-American Scholar Athlete in 2014.
Team USA will compete in the 2015 Pan American Games in Toronto on July 20-26. The Red, White and Blue open the tournament against Venezuela in Ajax, Ontario on July 20 in what will mark the first-ever women's baseball game in the history of the Pan Am Games. The U.S. will also take on Cuba, Puerto Rico and Canada in pool play with the semifinals scheduled for July 25 and the medal rounds to be played the following day.
Gajownik is one of only five players on the team that has not represented Team USA in a World Cup and is one of three players on the squad that hails from Florida.
“I can't wait to take the field to represent my family, friends, the USF athletics' family and every American citizen.”
