Three Bulls Tally Double Figures in Defeat

January 11, 2017

TAMPA, JAN. 11, 2017 – Despite double digit point performances from three players, the University of South Florida men’s basketball team (6-9, 0-4 The American) was defeated 82-67 by Tulane (4-12, 1-3) on Wednesday evening.

Junior guard Geno Thorpe (Pittsburgh) led all Bulls with 16 points. Junior center Ruben Guerrero (Spain) and sophomore forward Luis Santos (Bronx, N.Y.) registered 12 points each.

The Green Wave took the early advantage with an 11-2 run to begin the contest.

The Bulls then responded by going on an 18-8 surge to take their first lead, 20-19. Freshman guard Michael Bibby (Phoenix) hit a pair of treys to fuel the USF rally.

After the lead see-sawed a few times, Tulane entered the break with a narrow 40-38 edge.

The Bulls would trail until sophomore guard Troy Holston (Queens, N.Y.) made a driving layup, pushing USF in front 45-44 at the 15:24 mark of the second half. Shortly thereafter, Tulane would rattle off 10 consecutive points and never relinquish the lead again in the road victory.

Interim head coach Murry Bartow on the play of Guerrero and Santos: “If you look at Luis and Ruben combined, they had 24 points and nine rebounds from the (center) position. We can’t ask for any more than that. That’s phenomenal production from that position.”
