Bulls Blank Golden Eagles in Home Opener

TAMPA (Feb. 3, 2017) – The University of South Florida women’s tennis team opened their home season without dropping a single set, defeating Southern Miss in a 7-0 sweep.

The Bulls claimed the doubles point, and carried their strength into straight-set wins on each court against the Golden Eagles. Striking first, Brooke Lashway made quick work of Tzu-Hui Chen, 6-2, 6-2. Following suit, Ana Roman-Dominguez finished her match, 6-1, 6-3, to boost the Bulls to a 3-0 lead over Southern Miss.

In the No. 2 spot Nicole Dzenga clinched the match, 6-3, 6-3, to secure the win. Olga Martinez and Juliana Cardoso went into tie break sets during each of their matches, but made sure to continue the winning streak. Martinez defeated Rikeetha Pereira 7-6(6), 6-1 and Cardoso came back from a 4-1 deficit in the first set to top Tjasa Jerse 7-5, 7-6(4).

Undefeated duo Roman-Dominguez and freshman Lashway clinched the doubles point, 6-3, to continue their perfect record. Cardoso and Martinez put up USF’s first win after defeating Golden Eagles Carolin Drescher and Alex Kitchen.
