Bulls Fall to No. 18 Wolverines
Ann Arbor, Mich. (Feb. 5, 2017) – The USF men’s tennis team finished off a Big 10 road swing with a difficult loss to No. 18 Michigan, 4-1
After dropping the doubles point, the Bulls (1-3) hoped to settle the score with four wins in singles. Freshman Pierre Luquet and Alberto Barroso-Campos were close matched with their opponents, each going into tie breaks.
On court five, freshman Pierre Luquet put the Bulls on the board with a straight-set win over Davis Crocket 6-4, 7-6(4). In the No. 4 spot, Barroso-Campos narrowly fell after taking the first set by way of a tie break, and ending the match with a loss through a super tie-break, 7-6(5), 5-7, 1-0(5).
Seniors Sasha Gozun and Vadym Kalyuzhnyy put up a tough fight on courts one and six, respectively. Gozun took his first match 6-4, but subsequently dropped the second and third in two close sets, 6-3, 6-4. After a quick 6-2 loss in the first set, Kalyuzhnyy reset and took the second 6-4. However, he was unable to break Michigan’s Carter Lin and dropped the final set 6-4. Justin Roberts in the No. 2 spot and Peter Bertran in the No. 3 spot dropped their matches in straight sets.
The Bulls fought hard in doubles play, taking two matches to a tie break, and leaving one unfinished. In the first court Gozun and Kalyuzhnyy fell 7-6(5), and Bertran and Roberts dropped their match 7-6(3).
Head Coach Ashley Fisher on how the team played...
"The scoreboard wasn't friendly over the weekend, but I was proud of the way the team competed. We are putting ourselves in a position to win, and with more hard work I'm confident these tough three set matches will fall our way. We really believe in each other and look forward to the challenge against another top twenty team this Sunday when we play Mississippi State"
The Bulls return to Tampa to begin their home slate Sunday, Feb. 12 against Mississippi State at 1 p.m.
