Bulls Defeat UNF and UNCW in Doubleheader

TAMPA (March 8, 2017) – The USF men’s tennis team rolled to a doubleheader sweep Wednesday with a 4-1 win over North Florida and a 4-0 victory over UNCW.

Match 1: USF 4, North Florida 1

No. 98 Peter Bertran clinched the 10 a.m. match for the Bulls with a 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 victory.

Three Bulls finished in straight sets to put USF ahead, 3-1, early in singles play. A quick 6-3, 6-0 match by senior Vadym Kalyuzhnyy put the Bulls on the board. No. 122 Alberto Barroso-Campos followed with a 6-1, 6-1 win in the No. 3 spot. Senior Sasha Gozun extended the lead with a big 6-3, 6-3 win over No. 49 Jack Findel-Hawkins.

North Florida just edged the Bulls to remain undefeated in doubles this season. The Ospreys claimed court two, 6-2, and Bulls split the point after taking court three, 6-4. Gozun and Barroso-Campos kept the score tied most of the match against No. 74 tandem Jack Findel-Hawkins and Jefta Kecic, before falling, 7-5.

Match 2: USF 4, UNCW 0

No. 122 Barroso-Campos came through with his fourth clinch of the season, finishing off Agustin Savarina, 6-3, 6-1, in the 3 p.m. match. The Bulls were up one point after doubles, and senior Gozun added to the lead with a win in the No. 1 spot, 6-2, 6-3. Freshman Nils Heimer put the victory within one point when he topped Leon Back, 7-6(6), 6-0.

The Bulls clinched the doubles point in two quick matches, starting with a 6-2 win on court one by Gozun and Barroso-Campos, followed by Wojcik and Kalyuzhnyy, 6-4.


·      Barroso-Campos leads the team in singles with a 9-2 record.

·      Barroso-Campos has clinched four matches for the Bulls.

“I was happy with singles. The guys came out with a lot of intensity in both matches. Doubles, we have to keep working and getting better each week… Overall it was a good day, and two wins is good. We are just going to have to keep improving with a match coming up Friday and a lot of matches this weekend.”

The Bulls will have a full weekend with VCU, Troy, Penn State, and their first conference match against Tulsa, all at home. Their first match of the weekend will be against VCU on Friday at 11 a.m.
