TAMPA, Fla. (March 14, 2017)—The USF women’s tennis team topped the Liberty Flames, 7-0, Tuesday afternoon to improve to 7-6 on the season. The Bulls had a dominating win, with three players taking their matches in straight sets.
With the doubles point in hand, Ana Roman Dominguez made quick work of Rebekah Anderson, topping her 6-1, 6-2 to give USF a 2-0 lead. Juliana Cardoso was right behind her, defeating Aleksandra Panchenko in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2.
Vera Bessonova would clinch the match with a 6-4, 6-1 victory on court three over Liberty’s Evangeline Crist.
Despite having the match won, the Bulls played out their other matches, taking all three.
Olga Martinez won a super tiebreaker in her third set to make it a 5-0 game. The senior topped Emily Groeneveld, 6-2, 4-6, 10-8.
Nicole Dzenga put the sixth point on the board in comeback fashion. After falling in her first set, 6-1, Dzenga forced a third set with a 6-1 win of her own. The sophomore fell behind, 5-1, in her final set but stormed back to force a tiebreaker, winning the match, 1-6, 6-1, 7-6(7).
Vanja Klaric also took her match to three sets, winning 6-7(4), 6-3,7-6(3) for the final point of the day.
Bessonova and Brooke Lashway clinched the doubles point for USF with a 7-6 (5) victory. USF struck first in doubles with a 6-4 win on court one, but Liberty would combat with a 6-4 win on court three. Bessonova and Lashway battled it out against the Flames, giving USF the 1-0 lead after doubles.
