Bulls Headed to Alabama, FSU Relays

By TOM ZEBOLD

USF Senior Writer

TAMPA – Two groups of Bulls are headed to two different elite track and field meets this weekend.

Select sprinters, hurdlers, jumpers and field event specialists will be in Tuscaloosa for the John Mitchell Alabama Relays that take place Friday and Saturday. USF’s competition will include Indiana, Iowa, Cincinnati, Wisconsin, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Southern Miss and Tulane.

Distance runners, sprinters, hurdlers and other field event competitors will be in Tallahassee for the FSU Relays that take place Friday and Saturday.

Top competition is no stranger to a USF team that spent its indoor season traveling to Alabama, Notre Dame, Kansas and Penn State.

“We set our indoor schedule up for top competition. Now these kids know they can compete against anybody at those meets,” head coach Warren Bye said.

USF hosted two meets earlier this month and won seven events at the 2013 Bulls Invitational last weekend. USF’s field event specialists stepped into the spotlight on day two of the meet when five Bulls took home titles. USF’s winners included Courtney Anderson (high jump), Casey Wagner (javelin), Matthew Oneal (triple jump), Marqueshia Stallworth (triple jump) and Aireonna Bailey (200). Both 4x400m relay teams also took top honors.

“It was good to see that all of our groups are getting better,” Bye said. “Our first meet out our field event kids did really well, jumpers specifically in the vertical jumps. Last week I thought our short sprinters and relay teams did a good job.”

Bye said the objective for this weekend is steadily improve in preparation for the biggest meet of the outdoor season less than two months away.

“They’ve had a week to prepare and we’ll see what happens. Each week we want them to get prepared for the Big East Championships,” Bye said.
