Head volleyball coach Courtney Draper continues to add to her 2013 team, as the Bulls inked defensive specialist Amy Van Sant and middle blocker Rachyl Thomsen, bolstering the 2013 freshman class.
“We are excited about adding Rachyl & Amy to our program,” Draper said. “Both played for top club teams nationally, and both are fierce competitors.”
A 6’2” middle blocker from Williams Field High School in Gilbert, Arizona, Thomsen led her division in blocks as a senior, and was seventh in the state of Arizona, earning AIA All-Section Second Team Honors and All-State Honorable Mention.
Thomsen played four years of club volleyball, and helped her team to a regional championship in the 18-1 Gold Division in 2011 after finishing in second place the year prior.
“Rachyl will be one of the tallest players on our team. She has the versatility to play middle or right side,” Draper said. “Her strength is her blocking, and she will be a strong presence at the net for us.”
Amy Van Sant joins the Bulls’ back row after starting four years at Lakeside High School in Atlanta, Georgia. Van Sant earned the starting libero role on her team as a freshman, and led the state with 6.6 digs per set (546 digs in 83 sets). Van Sant finished her career with 1,746 digs despite becoming a setter during her senior season, and was named to the All-Area Team as a junior and senior.
Van Sant is in her fifth year with the A5 Mizuno Volleyball Club, winning the regional championship three times in the last four years, and finishing as high as fifth place in the National Division at Junior Olympic Nationals.
“We needed to add ball control to our program this season and Amy will help in that area,” Draper said. “She’s playing at an extremely high level right now, and we’re excited to see how she can contribute to our team.”Thomsen and Van Sant join Hailey Brooks and Dakota Hampton in the incoming 2013 freshman class.
