Bulls in the Pros: Ramsay Signs With Astros

By TOM ZEBOLD

USF Senior Writer

TAMPA – The road to the big leagues starts now for James Ramsay.

USF’s former star center fielder recently signed his first pro contract with Houston after the Astros selected him in the seventh round of the MLB First-Year Player Draft. Ramsay has been assigned to the Tri-City Dust Devils of the short-season Class-A Northwest League.

Ramsay picked up his second All-Big East honor as a junior in 2013 when he led the Bulls in batting (.337), slugging (.449), hits (82) and total bases (109). The Brandon, Fla., native gained a ton of interest last summer when he became the Rawlings "Big Stick" Award recipient for leading the Northwoods League with a .381 batting average.

"James is a tough out and has the ingredients we look for in a top-of-the-order type hitter," Astros director of amateur scouting Mike Elias said in a team release Tuesday. "He has a patient eye, speed and a left-handed bat to go with his premium defense in center field. Our scouts have been excited by his play since high school and we look forward to seeing him wear out opposing pitchers as he advances through our system."

Lovecchio Signs With Blue Jays

Former USF right-hander Joey Lovecchio gets to continue his baseball career after signing a free agent contract with the Toronto Blue Jays shortly after the draft. Lovecchio will start out with either the Blue Jays’ GCL club or in the Appalachian rookie league.

Lovecchio wrapped up his senior season by going 5-6 as USF’s Sunday starter with a 4.40 ERA and 48 strikeouts in 77 2/3 innings.
