TAMPA – Head coach Agustin Moreno gets to see what his reloaded roster can do during the Bulls’ season-opening weekend at Georgia’s Bulldog Classic that begins Friday morning.
USF’s 2013-14 squad features four new Bulls making their collegiate debuts along with four seniors that will be tested against opponents from Georgia, NC State and Old Dominion. The event features both singles and doubles competition with a round-robin format at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens.
“We have four freshmen, so we need to get going,” Moreno said. “The University of Georgia is always one of the top-ranked teams and it’s an opportunity to get some good matches in.”
USF’s new faces include freshman Vera Bessanova, from Russia, who took home a pro doubles title at the $10,000 Astana tournament in Kazakhstan this summer. Joining Bessanova in the freshman class are Olaya Garrido-Rivas and Olga Martinez, both from Spain, along with Hailey Grillo from Fort Myers, Fla.
Moreno said a big part of opening weekend is seeing how the new doubles teams mesh together. Bessanova has been partnered up with Martinez and Garrido-Rivas will compete with senior Fanny Fracassi. Grillo has teamed up with senior Alessandra Bonte, while senior Kayla Rizzolo returns to action alongside senior Loreto Alonso-Martinez.
