TAMPA – The Bulls have a chance to equal their entire 2012 win total if they can get past a pair of tough conference opponents this weekend at the Sun Dome.
USF (15-11, 9-3) gets things started 7 p.m. Friday against Cincinnati before matching up with first-place Louisville on Sunday at noon. USF is tied with UCF for second place in the American Athletic Conference, while the Cardinals (18-7, 13-0) lead the way.
Head coach Courtney Draper’s squad went 17-15 last season and has six matches left in the regular season to surpass the total.
“One of the most important things for us is to keep building this program,” Draper said. “Every year we need more wins than the year before. We’re going to have to really work hard, but I’m excited about the potential.”
USF’s late-season push has included victories in seven of its past eight matches after beating UConn and Rutgers on the road last weekend. Senior middle blocker Andrea Rodriguez Gomez was named American Player of the Week after averaging 2.57 blocks and 2.57 kills per while hitting .500 over the weekend. Rodriguez Gomez currently ranks 11th nationally in blocks per set (1.47).
“A lot of middle blockers are satisfied with one block per set and for her to have two and a half per set last weekend was very impressive,” Draper said. “She’s hitting .402 in conference play, which is second-best in the league, and I couldn’t be more proud and happy about her successes in her last year as a Bull.”
Reminder: Kids Clinic After Sunday’s Match
USF will hold a free one-hour volleyball clinic on the court after Sunday’s match for kids in middle school or younger.
All participants will need a signed waiver by a parent or guardian. Waivers will be available at Sunday's match, or THIS FORM may be pre-printed, signed, and brought to Sunday's match.
