• Men's soccer advanced in the BIG EAST tournament, defeating Marquette, 2-1, Thursday night at the USF Soccer Stadium in the first round of the play as the Bulls look to defend their 2008 BIG EAST Championship. USF advances to play Notre Dame Sunday afternoon in the quarterfinals.
• USF volleyball hosts Louisville tonight at 7 p.m. followed by Cincinnati Sunday at 2 p.m. in the last BIG EAST home matches for the Bulls in 2009. The seniors will be honored Sunday as USF hosts Senior Day. • Fans heading to Sunday's Buccaneers game can catch a glimpse of NFL Hall of Famer Lee Roy Selmon, the President of the USF Foundation Partnership for Athletics, as he gets inducted into the Bucs' Ring of Honor. • Despite having a bye week, USF football was in the news several times Thursday. First, linebacker Kion Wilson was selected to play in the East-West Shrine Game Jan. 23 in Orlando, the fifth player for USF to accept an invitation to play in the game. Another defensive player, safety Nate Allen, was nominated for the Wuerffel Trophy, which is given to the player who "best combines exemplary community service with academic and athletic achievement." • Quarterback B.J. Daniels is becoming Mr. Big Play for the Bulls, as he ranks first in the nation in yards per completion. Wide receiver Carlton Mitchell, the beneficiary of those big plays, continues to move up the all-time receiving charts for USF.
• Fans looking to get tickets to the Miami game are in luck, as the Hurricanes returned 3,000 tickets from their allotment, which can be purchased through group plans.
• Much like football coach Jim Leavitt did early in the season, women's basketball coach Jose Fernandez released his inaugural coaches' ballot that is used as part of the ESPN/USA Today women's basketball preseason Top 25 poll.
