Gold Evens up Fall World Series with 6-3 Victory
TAMPA, Fla.- Eric Sim and Ryan Lockwood led a 14 hit barrage as the Gold team evened up the 2009 USF Fall World Series at one game apiece with a 6-3 victory over the Green team Friday evening at Red McEwen Field.
Sim tallied three doubles and drove in three runs to lead the way for Gold team.
The Gold team started the game by jumping out to an early 2-0 lead. Junior Ryan Lockwood led off the game with a chopper down the right field line for a double. Lockwood wouldn't stay on second for long as Luis Llerna doubled off the left field wall to score Lockwood.
Llerna advanced to third on a passed ball then crossed home plate on Todd Brazael's sac Fly to right.
Down 2-0, Green responded by picking up a run off Gold starter Andrew Barbosa courtesy of a lead-off double by Alex Mendez followed by an RBI single from Steven Hunt two batters later.
However, the 6-8 lefty settled into a rhythm and shut down the Green offensive attack going five innings, scattering three hits while striking out four.
Sim went to work in the third with an RBI double to the gap in right and then an inning later hit another double to the same spot with a shot off the warning track which drove in two.
The Green team cut the lead to 5-3, with runs in the fifth and the eight but could not get any closer.
For the game the Gold out hit the Green by a 14-6 margin.
In the ninth, Ryan Lockwood's RBI single scored Sim to tack on an insurance run to extend the lead to 6-3. Senior Joe Cole worked a perfect ninth to pick up the save.
The Green and Gold will clash again Saturday afternoon with first pitch slated for 3 p.m. at Red McEwen Field in the rubber match of the three game series.
