TAMPA - Using a lethal combination of explosive offense and suffocating defense, the University of South Florida women's soccer team opened the 2010 season with a decisive 4-0 victory over in-state foe North Florida Friday evening at the USF Soccer Stadium.

USF (1-0-0) outplayed the visiting Ospreys in almost every facet of the match, out shooting the visitors 21-3 and maintaining possession throughout. Nine of the Bulls' efforts were on goal.

After peppering the UNF keeper with a number of near misses early on, UNF’s Kristin Lazowick picked up a red card thanks to a blatant take down of Chelsea Klotz on a breakaway just outside the box removing her from the match.

The Bulls would fully take advantage of the Ospreys playing a player down.

Junior Venicia Reid, a transfer from Navarro Junior College, got the Bulls on the board first in the 34th minute with the Bulls' first goal of the season.

Reid, an accomplished goal scorer in the JUCO ranks, didn’t take long to live up to her reputation. After checking into the game with less than 16 minutes remaining in the first half, Reid got behind the defense on a deep ball from Kelly Campbell and beat the keeper to the near post for her first goal as a Bull.

Not to be out done, junior Chelsea Klotz carried over her hot preseason by tallying her first goal of the season off an assist from Rehana Murani just minutes later. Klotz raced down the left side off a through ball and beat the keeper one-on-one for her first mark of the season.

Klotz was certainly the most active Bull on the night recording eight shots with three on goal in 61 minutes of action.

With a 2-0 advantage in their pocket, the USF defense clamped down giving North Florida little to no opportunity to get anything going offensively. In fact USF held the Ospreys without a shot on goal until the 51st minute.

Newcomer Sharla Passariello and junior Noelle Pineiro added insurance goals for the Bulls in the second half. Passariello took a timely feed from Reid in the 59th minute to score and Pineiro buried a free kick from 20-yards out to wrap up the Bulls scoring in the 87th minute.

Junior net-minder Nicole McClure, making her first start as a Bull, stopped both Osprey attempts on goal to preserve the shutout.

Following tonight's win, USF will be off until August 27 when they head to Murray, Ky., to take part in the 2010 Racer Classic. The Bulls will take on host Murray State on Friday at 2 p.m. and then will close out the Classic when they take on Southeast Missouri State on Sunday at noon.

Game Notes:
Tonight's attendance was 819... The fouls were even at seven each... Six Bulls made their USF debuts... UNF played the final 61 minutes of the game a player down... USF scored all of their goals while playing with a player up... The four goals scored are the most since USF tallied six in a win over Stephen F. Austin on Sept.11 2009... USF is now 3-1-1 against North Florida all-time... With the win USF improves to 6-7-2 in season openers and 4-4-2 in home lid-lifters... They are undefeated in their last five season openers (3-0-2)... Klotz's goal was the 14th of her career and moved her into fifth place all-time on the Bulls career goals list.
