TAMPA- University of South Florida softball players Sara Nevins and Gina Kafalas were honored by the BIG EAST Conference Monday for their performances against Connecticut over the weekend.
Nevins was named the BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week for the second time this season, her third appearance in the weekly awards, and Kafalas was named to the Weekly Honor Roll marking the 10th time this season a Bull has appeared in the weekly awards.
Nevins went 2-0 over the weekend in a series sweep of Connecticut to help the Bulls move to 12-1 in league play. The freshman also earned a save in the third game, her eighth of the year, tops in the nation and a program-record for saves in a season at USF.
In her past five starts, Nevins has pitched a complete game shutout. She is now 14-5 on the season with 8 saves and an ERA of 1.71, and has not allowed a run in the past 41.1 innings dating back to April 3. Over the weekend, the freshman allowed 0 runs on just seven hits in 11.1 innings with an opponent batting average over .176.
Kafalas led the way offensively for the Bulls in the weekend sweep of Connecticut. The junior batted an unreal .625 in the three games with six runs scored. She drove in one, walked twice and was a perfect 4-for-4 in stolen base attempts. Kafalas slugged .625 and had an on-base percentage of .700, while scoring two runs in each of the three games and had two multi-hit performances.
Nevins, Kafalas and the rest of the Bulls will square off against No. 23 Notre Dame on Wednesday at 11 a.m. looking to stay atop the BIG EAST standings. Both games of the double-header can be seen on Brighthouse Sports Network.
