BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Stephanie Duffy advanced to the NCAA Championships in the pole vault as the University of South Florida opened competition at the NCAA East Preliminary Round meet on Thursday. Duffy, who entered the weekend ranked 12th in the region and tied for 29th nationally, cleared 13-1.50 on her third attempt to tie for fourth overall on misses, putting her in the group of 12 that move on. She entered the competition by getting over 12-7.50 on her first attempt.
David Aristil, who entered the meet ranked second in the region and seventh nationally, took the first step to competing at the NCAA Championships in two weeks as he advanced to the second round of the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 51.30. Running in the third of six heats, Aristil bettered Georgetown's Toby Ulm, who ran a 51.37, to win the heat and automatically advance. Aristil's time was the third-best mark of the day. He'll look to punch his ticket to the national meet tomorrow evening.
In other action, Antillio Bastian placed 34th in the 100 meters with a time of 10.68, but will have another chance to advance with the 200 meters tomorrow. Neaman Wise was unable to qualify with a mark of 23-8 in the long jump to finish 25th, while Lauren Noe placed 22nd in the hammer throw with a mark of 181-7.
In addition to Aristil in the 400 hurdles and Bastian in the 200 meters, Casey Wagner (javelin), Marqueshia Stallworth (triple jump), Monique Williams (triple jump), Shane Lewis (triple jump) and Nicole Rozario (Steeplechase) will compete on Friday. To follow the action, click here.
