ORLANDO -
The USF volleyball team (4-5) defeated tournament host UCF (8-2) in the battle of I-4, 11-25, 26-24, 27-25, 25-21 to capture the UCF Invitational crown Sunday night.

The four-set triumph marks the first four-game winning streak for the Bulls since the 2009 season.

"This was a huge weekend and I am so proud of this team," head coach Claire Lessinger said. "We continue to get over humps and have breakthroughs everyday. We played team volleyball all weekend and stayed consistently productive on offense and defense."

Freshman Valerie El Houssine was named the Tournament MVP, while sophomore Andrea Rodriguez Gomez and newcomer Shelbie Dailey were named to the All-Tournament Team.

The freshmen duo of El Houssine and Dailey carried the Bulls throughout the tournament. El Houssine recorded double-digit kills for the sixth consecutive match, while Dailey set a new personal best with 41 assists.

"Valerie [El Houssine] was an elite six rotation player for us," Lessinger said. "She was a threat in serve receive, at the service line and offensively. She plays with such poise and confidence for a freshman."

USF dropped the opening frame to the host Knights, who had swept their last six opponents, including No. 3 USC.

The Bulls stormed back to win the next two games and seize the momentum with the score 2-1. Behind a hitting percentage of .267 and stellar defensive play, USF controlled much of the fourth set and eventually put away the Knights, 25-21.

J’beria Davis paced the Bulls with 15 kills and a hitting percentage of .303. Senior libero Janice Rivera posted a match-high 20 digs, raising her career total to 929. Rodriguez Gomez tallied double-digit block assists (10) for the second time this season.

USF will compete in the Wisconsin Inn Towner Challenge next weekend.
