Jose Fernandez Blog: The Start of 2011

I begin the 2011 Jose Fernandez Blog with a somber note. Our athletics program lost a great man this past weekend in Lee Roy Selmon. Lee Roy was one of the nicest men I have met, and was an instrumental part of building the USF Athletic Department. My thoughts and prayers are with his family.

On a lighter note, we started individual workouts and it is great to have all the players back after they have been working out all summer with Graham Anderson and Donna Jordan. Graham, Donna and their staffs did a great job with the girls getting them ready for the season, and now they are working on preparing to handle the grind of the season.

This summer was a special one for us as a program.

We moved into our beautiful new practice facility, the Les and Pam Muma Practice facility. It is top notch. The ability to have a place where student-athletes can come in 24 hours a day and seven days a week is just amazing. There is a video room, a player lounge, locker room and last but not least all of our offices.

I also had to opportunity to welcome back a long-time friend in Cayll Smith as our video coordinator. Cayll previously worked with us as Director of Operations and we are so glad to have him back.

The first three weeks of workouts have been a test for the kids, but they have really showed their commitment, especially Caitlyn Rowe, Jasmine Wynne and Kaneisha Saunders who have each earned Practice Player of the Week Honors from our staff.

We are excited for the upcoming season which includes a difficult test of games, both in the Big East as well as our non-conference slate.

Be sure to check back in to keep up to date on everything we are doing.

Thanks and Go Bulls!
