The Bulls ended the fall portion of their schedule on a huge high note.
The USF men's golf team had three players finish in the top 10 and took third place overall at The Invitational at The Ocean Course in Kiawah Island, S.C., on Tuesday.
Freshman Branden Collins was USF's top finisher after carding two awesome rounds of golf. The freshman broke a tournament record with a second-round score of 66 on Monday and posted a 69 in Tuesday's final round to end up in a tie for third place at 4 under.
"Branden played extremely good golf over the last 36 holes," head coach Chris Malloy said. "He is starting to see his hard work paying off."
Fellow freshman Trey Valentine continued his strong debut as a Bull by finishing in fifth place at 3 under. He has placed in the top five in each of the Bulls' three fall events.
"Trey had an incredible fall season," Malloy said. "It is tough to play well each time that you come out and that is exactly what he did."
Both Collins and Valentine have been consistent for USF so early in their college careers, which is a pleasant surprise for Malloy.
"I am very proud of how the freshmen have transitioned into college," Malloy said. "Now it's time to get back and get caught up in the classroom, and finish the semester strong academically."
Sophomore Bodi Karsono also has been very strong for the Bulls this season and added to his fall success by finishing in a tie for seventh place at even par.
"Bodi had two very good tournaments this fall," Malloy said. "I am glad to see him really step up his game and play well. He deserves it."
USF has finished in the top 10 in each of its three tournaments this fall. Still, Malloy doesn't want his team being content, especially with how close they came to a win this week.
"A great end to our fall season for our young guys. As was the case in the first event, we had three players in the top 10. That usually leads to a team win, but not this week," Malloy said. "We need to have someone step up and help these guys. Right now we seem one man short. We will get back and regroup and work on that."
