Pry, USF in Fourth After Day 1 at Cards Challenge

USF Senior Writer
- Kelli Pry earned "MVP" status from her head coach Monday afternoon.
Pry fired eight birdies in two rounds to get into fourth place at 1 under while the USF women's golf team also is in fourth after the first day of the Sir Pizza Cards Challenge in Weston, Fla.
Pry carded first and second rounds of 71 and 72 and finds herself only five shots away from leader Augusta James of NC State.
"Kelli Pry get MVP status," head coach Marci Kornegay said. "I'm proud of her consistency and focus for most of the holes. She made a double from 67 yards out on No. 2 which is frustrating when you are hitting the ball well, but she recovered nicely with a birdie on the next hole."
Kelsey Gibson, play for her first time in USF's top 5, is only eight shots away from the lead while being in USF's No. 2 slot.
"Kelsey really went out with one goal in mind and that was to have fun. There are so many times we forget to have fun out there," Kornegay said. "We start to press and make things happen instead of trusting our commitment to playing the game."
Anna Hancock is coming off a performance as USF's top finisher in the team's first spring event and is stayed at a steady pace at 6 over Monday. She cut four shots off her first and second rounds to remain only 12 shots off the lead.
"Anna came back playing better on the second round and felt a little better about her ball striking," Kornegay said.
