TAMPA - Ecaterina Vasenina and Loreto Alonso Martinez have provided the Bulls with tons of production this season and they were rewarded for their efforts this week.
USF's junior and sophomore were named to the All-Big East women's tennis team after helping the Bulls post a runner-up finish at the conference championships last weekend in Tampa.
Vasenina has had the tough task of being USF's No. 1 singles player and has performed well this spring by posting a 17-7 record after going 9-3 in the fall.
"She's beaten some opponents that have been in the top 20. It's well deserved," head coach Agustin Moreno said.
Alonso Martinez went 6-5 in singles play in the fall and kicked it into high gear this spring with a 15-9 record.
"She's very talented and she has a lot of room to grow. She's always been a motivator for the other girls. She's always in a good mood and has helped the team a lot," Moreno said.
Vasenina and Alonso Martinez also have formed a solid No. 1 doubles team that went 14-6 this spring for the No. 42 Bulls. Both have earned Big East women's tennis player of the week honors at least once this season.
"Loreto hits the ball really hard and Ecaterina is consistent. A mixture of those two things makes them a very good doubles combination," Moreno said.
USF's dynamic duo and the rest of the Bulls should have a chance to keep playing this season when NCAA Regionals selection takes place May 1.
