TAMPA – The No. 5 Bulls came up short in their final exhibition test on Saturday night.

The Bulls fell, 1-0, to the University of Tampa in the annual Rowdies Cup. The loss was the first in the Rowdie's Cup in the past eight meetings.

“If we can learn from this game it will be good for us,” said head coach George Kiefer. “It was a very good preseason game for us.”

The Bulls and Spartans both played a scoreless opening half. Eric Osswald made a great save to keep the game scoreless and the junior picked up two saves in the match.

“I thought Eric made a great save in the first half,” said Kiefer. “He’s doing a good job commanding his box.”

Leston Paul came off the bench and led the way for the Bulls with two shots.  USF outshot UT 7-3 in the first half.

“I was pleased with the chances we created, and I feel if we create these chances on any night we will get two, three goals,” said Kiefer.

UT took a 1-0 advantage in the second half on an own goal by the Bulls.

“What changed the match was the soft goal that we gave up because it allowed Tampa to sit back,” said Kiefer.

USF finished with a 19-6 advantage in the shot column, but down one in the goal column.

USF will open its season in a nationally televised game on Fox Soccer Channel against Michigan Friday, Aug. 24 at Corbett Soccer Stadium.
