TAMPA - Two Bulls have the honor of representing the USF women's tennis program in the biggest national event of the fall season.
Katie Vasenina and Loreto Alonso Martinez have been selected to participate in the main doubles draw at the Riviera All-American Championships starting Sept. 29 in Pacific Palisades, Calif. Vasenina will pull double duty after being chosen to play in the singles qualifier rounds.
"This is as big of a tournament as the NCAA Championships. It is the fall tournament and all the best players go there," USF head coach Agustin Moreno said.
Moreno called being chosen for the main doubles draw a "huge achievement" for his top pair of players that excelled on the court together last season, posting 18 wins out of 28 matches. Moreno said what makes the combination of Vasenina and Alonso Martinez special is how each player complements the other on the court.
"Loreto hits the ball very hard. She's very tall and physical. Katie is more finesse," he said. "The good thing is they've played together for a long time and they know how to position themselves."
Vasenina is ranked No. 29 in the nation heading into the fall after the senior went 26-10 last season. The All-Big East selection ended her season playing in the NCAA Championships.
"Her hard work is paying off. It's a great achievement for her to be considered as one of the top players in the nation," Moreno said.
Vasenina and Alonso Martinez will tune up for the All-American Championships when they join the rest of USF women's tennis team to play in the Georgia State Invitational Sept. 22-24 in Atlanta.
