Alonso Martinez Shines in USF's Fall Opener

TAMPA - The USF women's tennis team kicked off its fall Friday on day one of the three-day Southern Shootout at Georgia State University's Sharon Lester Tennis Center.

Loreto Alonso Martinez defeated Jasmine Minor of Georgia Tech in straight sets, 6-0, 6-1. The victory was the only win of the day for USF.

"This is our first tournament, so we have to use this to get ready for the season," head coach Agustin Moreno said, adding that the team faced really good opponents. 

USF's top singles player, 29th ranked Ecaterina Vasenina, was defeated by Elizabeth Kilborn of Georgia Tech, 6-7, 6-2, 6-4.

Paula Montoya, Kate Parker and Katherine Pyne all fell to their opponents in straight sets in singles play. The Bulls begin doubles play tomorrow at 9 a.m., and singles matches start at 10 a.m.
