TAMPA - A pair of USF players are going up against the nation's best on the west coast this week.
Katie Vasenina and Loreto Alonso Martinez get going in the main doubles draw at the Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships Thursday in Pacific Palisades, Calif. Vasenina will pull double duty after being chosen to play in the singles qualifier rounds and the senior will start her solo run on Tuesday.
"Sometimes it's considered harder than the NCAA tournament because it's harder to be in the main draw. It's such a long tournament; it can last like 10 days," head coach Agustin Moreno said. "It's such a hard tournament to stay out there and do well. Everybody can play from the prequalifying to the main draw."
Vasenina and Alonso Martinez were selected to play in the event after winning 18 of their 28 doubles matches together last season. USF's duo tuned up for the prestigious event with the rest of the Bulls at the season-opening Southern Shootout Sept. 22-24 at Georgia State.
"It was very good because they had the opportunity to play tough matches," Moreno said.
Singles semifinalists, doubles finalists and consolation champions from the All-American event will receive automatic entries into the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships Nov. 8-11 in Flushing, N.Y.
