TAMPA - Katie Vasenina continued her winning ways at the USTA/ITA Southeast Regional by picking up her third straight singles victory on the weekend.
"I was really nervous before this match," Vasenina said Saturday. "She was hitting the ball so hard, but the slow courts helped me reach every ball. I'm really happy with the way I played.
The USF senior picked up right where she left on Friday, beating Georgia Tech's Elizabeth Killborn in three sets, 6-3, 2-6, 6-1. The victory held a bit more weight due to a meeting earlier in the year between the two. Vasenina played Killborn in her first match of the semester and had lost in three sets.
"It's a great victory because she lost to her before," said head coach Agustin Moreno. "It's the second girl that she has lost to this year and came back to beat in a couple weeks."
Vasenina will take on Sofie Oyen from the University of Florida in the quarterfinals on Sunday. These two have met three times before and Oyen is ahead in those meetings winning two out of the three.
"It's going to be a really tough match," Vasenina said.
