TAMPA - The Bulls advanced to the semifinals in doubles but were bitten by the injury bug in their singles matches Saturday at USF.
Ecaterina Vasenina started off strong on day two, winning her first match against UCF's Courtney Griffith without giving up a single game, 6-0, 6-0.
"She played well," head coach Agustin Moreno said. " She was very aggressive."
The second match was a different story as Vasenina lost to Mia Vriens from Florida State University, 4-6, 6-4, 11-9.
"She was up 9-6, she had three match points. I came back and then I just lost two, just like that," Vasenina said.
Vasenina was able to complete the match, but later said that she was suffering from a minor back issue.
Loreto Alonso Martinez was down, 3-1, in the second set of her match against Amy Sargeant, also from Florida State, when she was forced to retire from the match with an injury.
Although she retired from singles play, Alonso will continue to play in the doubles competition with Vasenina. In the quarterfinals matchup, Alonso and Vasenina won their only doubles match on the day, 8-0, against UCF's Jenna Doerfler and Clare Mendell.
"Hopefully in doubles you don't have to move that much like in singles," Moreno said. "They played great doubles today."
The two will team up again Sunday to take on Lina Lileikite and Kelsey Laurente from the University of Miami in the semifinal round of the doubles competition.
