TAMPA - The USF women's tennis team and its top players have a nice starting point for the spring season.
The Bulls are No. 43 in the nation in the first ITA Division I Women's Team Rankings of the semester heading into their season opener Saturday, Jan. 12 at home against Syracuse. Senior Katie Vasenina is ranked No. 35 in singles play and junior Loreto Alonso Martinez will start off No. 75 in the country.
USF capped 2011-12 off with a runner-up finish at the Big East Championships and continued to get great production from its top players this fall.
Vasenina made it to the NCAA Championships as an individual last season and her strong singles play continued this fall when she went 8-5 and posted wins over five ranked players, including then-No. 19 Joelle Kissell of NC State. Vasenina's fall semester also included a quarterfinals trip at the USTA/ITA Southeast Regional and a semifinal appearance with doubles partner Alonso Martinez at the Florida State Championships.
Loreto Alonso Martinez's game continued to get stronger in the fall when the she went 10-2 after posting nine straight singles victories to start the semester.
Fans can watch the Bulls' season debut for free when action begins at 9:30 a.m. on Jan. 12 at the USF Varsity Courts.
