TAMPA - The Bulls put their first Big East win of the season in the books Tuesday night and now they're looking to finish the week on a roll.
The USF women's basketball team starts a two-game road trip 2 p.m. Saturday at Villanova and getting back to even ground in league play certainly won't be easy. The Wildcats (14-2, 3-0) have won five straight and they rank second in the Big East in scoring defense at 48.6 points allowed per game. Villanova gave up an average of 49 points in wins over Cincinnati, DePaul and Pittsburgh to start league play.
Scoring hasn't been a problem for the Bulls, who rank sixth in the Big East at 74.1 points per game and have averaged 77 points in their past seven contests. Big East Player of the Week Andrea Smith is averaged 28 points in league play so far and put up a team-high 17 points in USF's 77-44 home win over Cincinnati on Tuesday.
USF's defense got back on track against the Bearcats by forcing 25 turnovers that included 14 steals. The Bulls rank fourth in the Big East with 12.8 steals per contest and are led by Andrell Smith's 49 takeaways.
The Bulls have won each of the past seven games they've played against Villanova since joining the Big East and defeated the Wildcats, 54-39, last season at the USF Recreation Center. Andrell Smith scored 22 points and Tiffany Connor grabbed 10 rebounds in the win while the Wildcats shot just 28 percent from the field.
USF wraps up its road trip 7 p.m. Tuesday at Seton Hall before returning to the Sun Dome to host Marquette at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 26.
