TAMPA – James Ramsay hit a walk-off, bases-loaded triple to center field to clear the bases and lift USF over Toledo, 9-8, on Sunday at USF baseball complex.
“No matter how many runs we’re down, we can come back and win,” said head coach Lelo Prado.
USF (4-6) rallied in the ninth inning scoring four runs with two outs. Jimmy Falla led things off with a walk, Chris Norton singled and Levi Borders doubled through the left side to bring home two runs. Nik Alfonso followed with an RBI-single and Ramsay hit a triple that scored Alex Mendez, Kyle Teaf and Alfonso.
“We just tried to keep our confidence throughout the game,” said Ramsay.
Ramsay went 2-for-4 with one homerun and four RBI’s. The junior hit his second homerun of the season.
“We have a great team, we have great confidence in our abilities and we were successful at the end,” said Ramsay.
Toledo got things started early batting around the order in the first inning.
The Rockets scored
four runs on three hits and one error to take a 4-0 lead. They would extend that
lead to 6-0 in the top of the sixth inning.
Toledo added one run in both the eighth inning and ninth inning, taking an 8-3 lead into the bottom of the ninth.
Six pitchers saw action against the Rockets. They combined for 11 hits, eight runs and six strikeouts. Right-hander Steven Leasure (1-0) earned his first win on the season.
“Puig, Serrallonga and some of the guys did a good job today,” said Prado.
