Bulls Post Fourth Straight Top-10 Finish

By TOM ZEBOLD

USF Senior Writer

TAMPA - Richard James went 2 under in the final round of the Seminole Intercollegiate to help the Bulls finish fourth out of 11 teams Sunday afternoon in Tallahassee.

The Bulls went 2 over as a team in the final round and went 3 under overall to post their fourth consecutive top-10 finish.

"It was an unbelievable team effort. Different guys stepped up and contributed each day," head coach Chris Malloy said. "For Richard James to step up and shoot 2 under on a tough day out there was impressive to see and I think that bodes well for us moving forward.'

USF's next-best score of the day came from Tallahassee native Branden Collins, who went even par at Southwood Golf Course. The sophomore finished the tournament 2 over and in a tie for 29th place.

"We knew that were going to more than likely need him to step up," Malloy said. "For the hometown boy coming back, that was good for him to really step up each of the rounds and help us out."

Chase Koepka bounced back with a 1-over 73 in the final round to finish in a tie for 13th at 2 under. It marked the freshman's fifth top-15 finish in seven tournaments as a Bull.

"Unfortunately he had a bad last hole that definitely lost him a top 10, but the guy played so solid all week," Malloy said. "He started with a 65, battled through a tough stretch yesterday. Today he really didn't have his best stuff and still put himself and his team in a good position. That's the sign of a really good player, especially as a freshman."

Trey Valentine also made his way into the top 20 by finishing the tournament even par that was good for 17th place. The sophomore shot a 3-over 75 in the final round to post his fourth top-20 finish of the season.

James' hot round helped him move up to 33rd place at 4 over. Freshman Jeffrey Meltzer was right behind James in a tie for 34th place at 5 over.

The Bulls' season continues March 23-24 at the Linger Longer Invitational in Reynolds Plantation, Ga., and Malloy is confidence another strong performance awaits.

"I think we're starting to show some consistency. We're such a young team and that's something that's developed over time," he said. "It's a process and I think we're starting to see the results that we would like. We're just working on getting better every tournament."
