TAMPA – Freshman Lee Ann Spivey homered and drove in a pair of runs to help the Bulls complete a doubleheader sweep of St. John’s on Wednesday afternoon at the USF Softball Stadium.
Spivey’s fourth homer of the season capped off USF’s scoring in the 5-2 victory while the Bulls’ aces completed a solid day in the pitcher’s circle.
Sara Nevins (14-5) struck out four and gave up an earned run on two hits in 3 1/3 innings of relief. Lindsey Richardson struck out seven and allowed an earned run on one hit in 3 2/3 innings a game after teaming up with Nevins for a three-hit shutout against the Red Storm (9-25-1, 3-5).
“They’re doing their jobs. They’re getting people out in crucial situations and putting the ball in play for our defense to make plays,” assistant coach Monica Triner said.
USF (29-11, 7-1) took the first game of the doubleheader, 4-0, and extended its winning streak to six games heading into a weekend road trip. USF has won 23 of its past 24 games.
The Bulls start a three-game series at Pittsburgh with a doubleheader on Saturday that begins at noon. Sunday’s series finale also is scheduled for a noon start.
