TAMPA – USF’s freshman starter Jimmy Herget pitched a complete game to snap No. 26 Pittsburgh’s 9-game winning streak on Friday night at USF Baseball Stadium.

“He’s a competitor and he competes all the time,” said head coach Lelo Prado. “There aren’t many freshmen that would do what he did tonight against this team.”

Herget (3-1) gave up three hits, one walk and four strikeouts in the shutout.  The right-hander has allowed only six hits and no runs in conference play.

“He didn’t walk many guys and he just competed.  This team likes playing behind Jimmy,” Prado said.

USF (16-14) jumped on the scoreboard early.

Alex Mendez reached on a fielding error, James Ramsay followed with a single and Jimmy Falla singled through the left side to plate Mendez and put the Bulls up 1-0 in the first inning.

Starting shortstop Kyle Teaf singled to stretch his on-base streak to 24 straight games.

“He comes out and plays the game the way it’s supposed to be played,” said Prado. “I’m just happy for him.”

Nick Gonzalez will get the start 6 p.m. Saturday against Pittsburg in the second game of the weekend series.  The series finale is scheduled for 11 a.m. Sunday at USF Baseball Stadium.

“I hope tomorrow we come out with the same attitude and play even harder,” said Prado.
