TAMPA – The No. 57 Bulls took care of business quickly in their first Big East Championship match Thursday morning at the USF Varsity Courts.
It took second-seeded USF less than two hours to defeat No. 15 seed Villanova, 4-0, at the USF Varsity Courts. The Bulls improved to 7-1 in Big East play this season and advanced to Friday’s 9 a.m. match against No. 10 seed Pittsburgh.
“We were mentally and physically ready for this. It’s always good to finish as fast as we can because we have to save ourselves for every round,” head coach Agustin Moreno said.
Alessandra Bonte and Kayla Rizzolo got things started with an 8-0 doubles win over Wesleigh Donadio and Anne Cognetti. Fanny Fracassi and Paula Montoya clinched the doubles point with an 8-2 victory over Allison Kuse and Kate Pettee.
Three singles matches went unfinished while the Bulls advanced with ease. Montoya cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 win over Pettee while Loreto Alonso-Martinez handed Tori Smyth a 6-1, 6-1 loss in the No. 2 singles spot. Bonte capped off the Bulls’ strong tournament debut with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Donadio.
“There is always a little pressure to win at home, but it’s also a good pressure. We’ve worked hard and we’re going to give it our all in this tournament,” Moreno said.
