Bulls Book Big East Semifinal Trip With Ease

By TOM ZEBOLD

USF Senior Writer

TAMPA – The No. 57 Bulls continued to make quick work of opponents in the Big East Women’s Tennis Championship quarterfinals Friday morning.

Second-seeded USF defeated No. 10 seed Pitt, 4-0, a day after handing Villanova a 4-0 loss at the USF Varsity Courts. The Bulls improved to 8-1 in conference play this season and have won both of their tournament matches in less than two hours.

“It’s hot and humid. I think the best thing you can do is to win as fast as you can and we’re doing that,” head coach Agustin Moreno said. “We’re used to the weather getting a little hotter, but over the course of a couple of days it could drag you down.”

Alessandra Bonte and Kayla Rizzolo got things started with an 8-3 doubles win over Kimmy Borza and Karma Parbha. Fanny Fracassi and Paula Montoya clinched the first point of the match by toughing out an 8-6 victory over Molly Wickman and Amanda Wickman.

“The emotions of the Big East tournament with a lot family here, I think we’re getting used to it. As the tournament goes on, I think we’ll be sharper in that sense,” Moreno said.

Katie Vasenina didn’t have a problem staying in her zone while cruising to a 6-1, 6-0 win over Taylor Washington at the top singles spot.

“Yesterday I was really nervous especially because my family came and it was a big deal. Today I just played my tennis with drop shots and lobs. I felt really good on the court,” Vasenina said.

Montoya also looked sharp in a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Amanda Wickman while Loreto Alonso-Martinez capped the match off with a 6-0, 6-3 victory over Jocelyn Lu in the No. 2 singles position.

The Bulls are now one win away from booking their third consecutive trip to the Big East title match. USF will face No. 3 seed Louisville 9 a.m. Saturday.

“We’ve been waiting for this all season and we’re super excited,” Vasenina said.
