TAMPA - The USF men’s soccer team opened their slate of exhibition games on Tuesday night with a 1-0 victory over St. Leo at Corbett Stadium.
The Bulls scored in the 10th minute after a series of passes ended with a tap in goal by junior forward Kennedy Selorm Adablah. Senior Stiven Salinas and freshman Lindo Mfeka were credited with assists on the goal.
With 21 minutes remaining in the first half the game was delayed for approximately a half hour due to lightning in the area.
“It’s something you have to deal with so I can’t write that into the script, but I was happy in an exhibition game we got to figure out what we would do so it was helpful,” head coach George Kiefer said.
USF goalkeepers Dallas Jaye, Brentton Muhammad and Drew Trautmann all played about 30 minutes each and combined to post the shutout.
“I was really pleased that we got a shutout, I think that’s important to this team. I made a lot of changes so the guys on the bench in the second half were getting on the guys to make sure they kept at it.”
USF outshot St. Leo 11-5 on the night and had four shots on goal while holding the Lions to only two and none in the second half.
“I thought some of our movement on the O (offense) was really good. Our rhythm in the first half, the way we moved off each other, the way we moved the ball, the way we created chances I was really pleased with.”
The Bulls host the University of Tampa in their annual matchup for the Rowdies Cup 7:30 p.m., Saturday at Corbett Stadium.
