FT. MYERS, JAN. 17, 2014--- Freshman Vadym Kalyuzhnyy led the Bulls on day one of the Illini Open in Fort Myers. Kalyuzhnyy defeated No. 59 Elliot Orkin from the University of Florida for his first ranked win, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2. Overall, the Bulls won five of their eight singles matches for a positive start to the three-day event.
“We were pleased with the effort the guys brought,” head coach Matt Hill said. “The guys competed very well and worked well together on the court. We got off to a good start to the tournament.”
The Bulls finished the day in singles taking three out of four matches from Illinois and splitting with the Gators, two points apiece. In addition to Kalyuzhnyy's big win, Sasha Gozun, Roberto Cid, Ignacio Gonzalez-Muniz and Everth Dzib were all victorious for the Bulls. In doubles, the Bulls were unable to pick up any points, with Cid and Gozun falling to Orkin and Gordon Watson of the Gators in a tiebreaker, 6-5 (8).
The Illini Open continues tomorrow and Sunday, with doubles play beginning at 10 a.m. and singles play to follow. The Bulls will once again be facing off against players from the University of Illinois and the University of Florida.
