TAMPA, JAN. 24, 2014 – The Bulls won their first home match of the season on Friday, beating FAU 6-1 on the USF Varsity Tennis Courts. USF won the first two doubles matches to pick up the doubles point and won all but one singles match in the convincing win over the Owls.
“Overall it was good. We worked a lot on doubles this past week, so that obviously cleaned up. It looked much better than last weekend, which was a plus,” head coach Matt Hill said.
In doubles, the team of Roberto Cid and Sasha Gozun defeated FAU’s team of Andrei Morin-Kougoucheff and Will Neuner 6-3 in the first match. Oliver Pramming and Everth Dzib took the match on court three, beating Stefan Burnett and John Nowak 6-1.
In singles, Finn Meinecke won his first match as a Bull, beating Harrison Heysek 6-1, 6-2. The Bulls picked up five of the six singles matches, with Pramming, Gozun, Dzib and Vadym Kalyuzhnyy also picking up wins. All matches won by the Bulls were decided in straight sets.
“Finn Meinecke hadn’t been healthy for quite some time, and he’s just getting back. For it being his first match of his career, coming off being injured, to win as convincingly as he did, that was really good to see,” coach Hill said on Meinecke’s big win for the Bulls.
The Bulls will be back on the court next weekend, taking on FGCU on Saturday, February 1st and the University of North Florida on Sunday, February 2nd. Both matches will take place on the USF Varsity Tennis Courts, with doubles starting at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday and at 12:00 p.m. on Sunday. Singles matches will follow immediately after doubles on both days, and admission is free.
“Next weekend will definitely be tougher, with Florida Gulf Coast and North Florida, who has a very good team this year, so back to work on Monday.” coach Hill said.
