TAMPA, FEB. 4, 2014 – Roberto Cid has been named American Athletic Conference Men’s Tennis Player of the Week after helping the No. 74 Bulls stay perfect at home.
The sophomore from Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic didn’t drop a set on the way to posting four victories for the Bulls in a pair of 6-1 wins over FGCU and North Florida. Prior to joining the Bulls, Cid was ranked as highly as No. 900 in the ATP rankings and competed on the Dominican Republic's Davis Cup team.
“Even though it’s his first year of playing college tennis he’s an extremely experienced player and he’s showing that right now,” head coach Matt Hill said. “He’s the most consistent performer on our team right now and he keeps getting better week to week. We’re excited for him.”
Cid got his stellar week started by teaming up with freshman Sasha Gozun and cruising past FGCU opponents, 6-3, on Feb. 1 at the USF Varsity Courts. Cid then picked up a 6-2, 6-1 singles win over Dean Tsamas.
Cid and Gozun registered a 6-1 doubles victory against North Florida foes on Feb. 2 and Cid finished strong with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Norbert Nemcsek in the No. 2 singles spot.
The Bulls finished their first home stand of the spring with a 3-0 record and will begin a five-match road trip Saturday and Sunday against No. 53 Texas Tech and No. 60 Miami in Coral Gables, Fla. The Bulls’ next home match at the USF Varsity Courts is scheduled for Tuesday, March 4 against Tulane at 2 p.m.
